Joleon Lescott in action against Andorra

Lescott In England Win

by Matthew Gamble | Saturday 6 September 2008, 20:42

Joleon Lescott claimed an assist and a clean sheet as England defeated Andorra 2-0.

The Everton man partnered John Terry at the centre of defence and was largely untroubled throughout the contest in Barcelona.

Indeed, his biggest concern in the first half was a minor head injury sustained whilst attending an attacking set piece.

As a team, England toiled in the first half as they struggled to break down the minnows' packed defence.

Fabio Capello was clearly unimpressed, and introduced Joe Cole and Emile Heskey at half time.

The switch paid dividends as Cole scored twice in six minutes. The first, on 49 minutes, owed plenty to Lescott's deft touch from Frank Lampard's free kick.

The Chelsea man powerfully volleyed the ball home before latching onto a Wayne Rooney through ball to make it 2-0.

Glen Johnson, who scored at Goodison last weekend, had the ball in the net before the end but it was chalked off for offside.
