Cleansheets For Duo

by Craig Davies | Sunday 7 September 2008, 09:42

Tim Howard was in fine form as the USA beat Cuba 1-0 in the semi-final of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The win leaves Howard’s national side in first place in group one and the win can largely be put down to some fantastic saves by the Everton goalkeeper.

Howard made three significant saves on the night, including a fantastic stop in the 88th minute to push aside a Yeniel Marquez header that looked destined for goal.

The solidity of the US back-line has ensured that the side have now kept their fourth straight clean sheet – and a record third straight qualifying round victory.

Howard said: “The pitch wasn’t the best, and we had some problems with the heat.

“This is the third straight qualifying win on the road for us and that will do wonders to building up our confidence.”

Meanwhile, new Everton right-back Lars Jacobssen also claimed a clean sheet to help ensure a 0-0 draw with Hungary.

The defender played the full 90 minutes in the World Cup qualifier and that should stand him in good stead as he bids to return to full match fitness in time for Everton’s clash with Stoke City next week.
